American Goldfinch

Brief Description
A small, seed-eating songbird known for its acrobatic feeding habits and bouncy flight. It is the state bird of Iowa, New Jersey, and Washington.

- Region of Origin: North America
- Typical Sighting Period: Year-round in much of the United States; highly visible in spring and summer
- Plumage Details: Adult males in summer are bright yellow with a black forehead, black wings with white bars, and a white rump. Females and winter males are much duller olive-brown with dark wings.
- Ecological Significance: Acts as an important seed disperser; uniquely, it is strictly vegetarian, feeding almost exclusively on seeds which helps control weed and wild plant populations.
- Conservation Status: Least Concern (Population stable)
- Observation Tips: Look for them in open fields, orchards, and backyard feeders. They are particularly attracted to Nyjer (thistle) seeds and sunflowers.
