Plumage & appearance
Adult males in summer are bright yellow with a black forehead, black wings with white bars, and a white rump. Females and winter males are much duller olive-brown with dark wings.
Ecological significance
Acts as an important seed disperser; uniquely, it is strictly vegetarian, feeding almost exclusively on seeds which helps control weed and wild plant populations.

Observation tips
Look for them in open fields, orchards, and backyard feeders. They are particularly attracted to Nyjer (thistle) seeds and sunflowers.
