Key Field Marks
- Medium-sized, slim songbird (about 18 cm) with a longish tail and a slight, often barely noticeable crest
- Sooty brownish-gray hood covering the head, face, and throat, contrasting with plain brown upperparts and paler grayish-brown underparts
- Bright yellow undertail coverts (vent) — the single most useful field mark, visible even in poor light or brief views
- Dark bill and legs; no wing bars or obvious facial pattern
How to Tell It Apart from Similar Bulbuls
- Dark-capped Bulbul: extremely similar and formerly treated as part of the same species; ranges are largely separate (Dark-capped Bulbul replaces Common Bulbul across much of southern and eastern Africa), so location is often the best clue
- Red-eyed Bulbul: shows a conspicuous red eye-ring or orbital skin patch, which Common Bulbul lacks (Common Bulbul has a plain dark eye)
- Garden and other regional bulbuls are separated mainly by subtle differences in hood extent and undertail color intensity combined with range
Habitat, Range & Season
- Widespread and common resident across sub-Saharan Africa, from savanna and woodland edge to gardens, parks, and thickets
- Highly adaptable and often abundant around human habitation
- Present year-round; not migratory
Voice
- Cheerful, bubbly, chattering song, often rendered as "quick-quick-doctor-quick"
- A variety of chuckling, scolding calls, frequently given from an exposed perch
Behavior Notes
- Gregarious and conspicuous, often seen in pairs or small noisy groups
- Feeds on fruit, nectar, and insects, and will readily visit gardens and feeding stations
