Plumage & appearance
Males have multi-coloured iridescent plumage with a metallic green crest, coppery feathers on the back and neck, and blue/purple bodies. Females are duller brown with a prominent white patch on the throat and a white strip on the tail.
Ecological significance
Acts as both predator (consuming insects and tubers) and prey (for raptors and Himalayan weasels); also aids in soil aeration through digging and seed dispersal.
Conservation status
Least Concern (IUCN), though threatened by poaching for meat and feathers as well as habitat loss.
Observation tips
Look for them in mixed conifer forests and alpine scrub at elevations between 2800-4200 masl. They are most active during early morning and late afternoon on open grassy slopes.
