Himalayan Monal

Brief Description
A large, colorful pheasant known for its brilliant plumage in males. They typically measure 60-70 cm in length and weigh between 2-3 kg. They live in high-altitude mixed conifer forests and alpine meadows.

- Plumage Details: Males have multi-coloured iridescent plumage with a metallic green crest, coppery feathers on the back and neck, and blue/purple bodies. Females are duller brown with a prominent white patch on the throat and a white strip on the tail.
- Ecological Significance: Acts as both predator (consuming insects and tubers) and prey (for raptors and Himalayan weasels); also aids in soil aeration through digging and seed dispersal.
