Key Field Marks
- Size & shape: A massive raptor, 78-96 cm long with a wingspan that can exceed 2 m, powerfully built with broad wings and a relatively small-looking head in flight.
- Adult plumage: Dark brown to blackish-brown head, upper breast, and upperparts, contrasting with white underparts boldly spotted with dark brown or black on the belly and legs; legs are feathered all the way to the toes.
- Eyes: Piercing bright yellow, and a short, often barely visible crest can be raised on the crown.
- Immatures/juveniles: Much paler overall, with a whitish head and largely unspotted or lightly marked underparts, becoming progressively darker-hooded and more heavily spotted with age.
- In flight: Broad, long wings show whitish underwing coverts contrasting with darker flight feathers.
Separating It From Similar Species
- Black-chested Snake Eagle is smaller, with an unspotted white belly and a rounder, owl-like head shape, lacking the Martial Eagle's heavy spotting and bulk.
- Crowned Eagle is a forest-dwelling eagle with heavily barred (not spotted) underparts, shorter and broader wings adapted for flying within the canopy, and a more prominent, always-visible crest.
- No other African eagle combines the Martial Eagle's huge size, dark hood, and spotted white underparts.
Where & When to See One
- Habitat: Open savanna, semi-desert, and woodland edge; generally avoids dense forest, requiring open country to hunt.
- Range: Sub-Saharan Africa, though increasingly uncommon and local due to persecution and habitat loss — it needs very large home ranges.
- Behavior: A powerful apex predator taking monitor lizards, hyraxes, small antelope, and game birds; frequently seen soaring high on thermals.
Voice
- Generally silent away from the nest; near the nest it gives a loud, barking or yelping kluu-kluu-kluu call.
